Intercultural Program on Prevention of Discrimination and Conflict

By: Інна Битюк

During the week of 9-15 October, the Center for European Initiatives (CEI) implemented an intercultural training program in Sumy, Ukraine, on the Prevention of Discrimination and Conflict. Participating in the program were youth leaders from Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, Romania, Russia, and Belarus. The program was co-sponsored by the Happy Childhood Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Poland, and was financially supported by the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe.

The learning project was directed at the awareness and prevention of discrimination against minorities and ethnic groups caused by intercultural misunderstandings. These pressing issues of the 21st Century that can lead to conflict and violence were addressed by the participants in intensive intercultural discussions and individual and group role play to better understand the cause and effects of discrimination.

Topics discussed during the training included understanding the values of different cultures and how to reach conflict resolution between majorities and minorities. As a result of the program, the project succeeded in raising awareness of young people from six countries of the need to prevent discrimination and cross-cultural conflict, to break stereotypes in relation to national minorities and, most importantly - motivate 24 youth leaders to act with similar initiatives in their own communities.

The comments and stories of those who attended the program will be included in brochures that raise awareness of discrimination and why it is important to resolve the issue with understanding and acceptance so that conflict and violence do not occur.
