In its third year the December 2008 project provided New Year’s gifts for 130 orphans and homeless children, ages 3-16, residing at two orphanages and one children’s homeless shelter in Sumy.

With the help of 25+ local youth volunteers and volunteers from the local Red Cross, 3 children’s facilities in Sumy were visited, and volunteers met with the children residing there. Each child was photographed and each created their own New Year’s card. Their photograph and New Year’s gift wish was placed on the backside of each of their cards.

For 3 days during the holidays leading up to New Year’s volunteers hung cards in a central location for public viewing and requested the public to select a child, and purchase the wished for gift. After all of the gifts were received (or purchased for those who donated cash) they were wrapped and prepared for delivery. On New Year ’s Eve, again with the help of local volunteers, gifts were presented to each of the 130 children residing in the 3 facilities.
