Camp EXCITE – Participating in Global Citizenship

We live in an age of hyper-globalization – International organizations, trade, travel, mass media, and communication have connected us all in unprecedented ways and at unparalleled depths. We are all touched by both the costs and benefits of this global interconnectivity. Our lives are enriched by the increased prosperity, cultural exchange, and technological sophistication that comes with globalization and is marred by the environmental problems, epidemics, illegal trades, and international terrorist threats that are some of globalization's unfortunate byproducts.

In this globalized world the dimensions of community membership and belonging are expanding daily. Individuals are no longer just members of civic or national communities but part of a global society. Global societies like local and regional societies require informed and active citizens. Global citizens should be dynamic participants in public life willing to engage in debate, challenge authority and conventional wisdom, initiate change, and volunteer their time and talents. Most importantly, good global citizens realize that responsibility and participation don't terminate at city or national borders but rather encompasses our entire planet.

What is Camp EXCITE?

  • Camp EXCITE is a series of exhilarating English language seminars for individuals with a high level of English. Seminars are taught by US Peace Corps volunteers who are all native English speakers.
  • During these seminars a wide range of topics are discussed. Participants have played Ministers from European Nations, solved conflicts between different ethnic groups, acted out debates, created newspapers, and performed theatrical presentations. They learned how to play American Football and Baseball, and have discussed the growing HIV/AIDS problem in Ukraine.
  • These seminars emphasize experiential learning and active youth participation.
  • The overall aim of this project is to initiate a dialogue on global citizenship and participation, particularly examining the meaning of global citizenship in a Ukrainian and European context.
